As the Israelites were about to enter the promised land, they were commanded to not intermarry with the inhabitants for fear of diluting the purity of being the chosen people of God. I see an obvious parrael in seeking to separate Christianity from being corrupted by combining it with America’s Nationalism. If you do a little research, you’ll discover that this idea of a country’s sanctioning a particular religion (Christianity, in this xase) seems to have started with Rome’s Emperor Constantine. He covered his empire to Christianity, He took away the oppression towards Christians and used his powers for the once oppressed to become the oppressors.
The Kingdom of God doesn’t need (nor can it tolerate) any government to coerce its inhabitants into Christian submission. Jesus didn’t do it and neither should we, or any other earthly power, obviously exponentially stronger than ourselves. Jehovah, through Christ created us as freewill agents. Jesus honors this freewill agency by not infringing upon directly, but by working out our sinful mistakes to accomplish his goals providentially.
If any government starts to limit our freedom of choice in order to establish a particular religion of the land, then, beware, it is not of God, but man. So, yes, I believe wholeheartedly in the 1st Amendment of our Constitution demanding the separation of church and state. Keep politics out of Christianity and Christianity out of politics.
