Immigration laws are tough and complicated. On one hand we (Christians also) are to obey the laws of our country. Yet, we are to be merciful to the poor and oppressed. Especially the ones who are seeking political asylum (refuges), but others also like DACAs (deferred action for childhood arrivals). Trump wants his promised wall and to get it, he’ll agree to extend DACA. Democrats say a wall’s not the way. And I’m inclined to agree with them. Walls aren’t the way of the “Way,” (but maybe the wall surrounding Jerusalem was a Jehovah exception?). We are suppose to be one nation under God–right? Let’s start showing some grace and mercy without any strings attached (Trump’s wall of shame).
And I believe that grace and mercy should be extended to the illegal parents of both American born children of illegal parents (“anchor babies”) and the illegal parents of DACA’s as well. After all, both groups have been living and contributing to our society for a number of years. What possible good can be accomplished by separating these families at this point in time? (I’m reminded of the movie Sophie’s Choice, in which the mother had to choose what child of two was to be taken from her at the hands of the Nazis).
Moreover, using separated parents from their children as deportation examples just to thaw the influx of more illegals is just plain inhumane! Do we Americans really know what its like to live in a place where the law can’t overcome the criminals? (Southside Chicago?) Where you are fearful for your lives every minute of the day? And if you’re lucky enough to escape to another country, what will likely be your demise, if you’re sent back!
Yes, previous immigration laws in America haven’t been enforced like they probably should have. But once immigrants have firmly established roots, and become integral parts of our society, it would be a travesty to then separate families because of our decades’ lack of enforcement. America have a heart, even if our supposed leader falls grossly short of exemplifying his “Make American great again” motto.
