As a youth mentor one summer in Ormond Beach, Florida, we personal at the Ormond Beach Recreation Center would transport summer campers up to Tomoka State Park for an afternoon of fun and games and a cookout. While we were preparing the food, the kids would swing out on a rope attached to an old cypress tree limb and slash into the dark, blackish water below, never thinking twice that it harbored nearby alligators. I guess we figured if couldn’t see them (the gators), they couldn’t see us either. Yeah, right, Larry. We were sooooo ignorant in our youth. I’m wondering if that kind of fun is still available today?
